Back in the 1950s and 60s our founder, MartinRay, would always bottle his Cabernet with 100% Cabernet Sauvignongrapes. His was a philosophy bent on telling the world thatpure(a.k.a. all Cabernet Sauvignon) was the best. While I admitthat with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay this is true, currently Iprefer to blend the Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and CabernetFranc. Why? Because of the harmony and grace that results.Yes, one sacrifices the intense power of Cabernet, yet the wholeexperience is fuller when it is sculpted through the use ofjudicious blending. The Bordelaise learned this centuries ago.

2006 opened up with tremendous promise. A frigid winter, full ofsnow and abundant rainfall are things we mountain winemakers lookfor. Bud break was late and the all important fruit set was rapidand complete. As predicted, harvest was late in October withcool autumnal temperatures, allowing us to harvest withexactitude.

Youthful aromas, with primary cassis, leather, and blackberrynotes, this wine offers full, buoyant flavors of red raspberry,plum and cassis. Since it is moderately structured, it shouldimprove until 2012 and hold for decades thereafter.

As with all of our estate wines in 2005, theCabernet Sauvignon crop was tiny. On a positive note, the growingseason was superb. A late Octoberharvest gave us a wealth of “hang time” which for this wine iseverything.

The color is notable, red on the edge, totallysaturated in the middle. Primary Cabernet fruit aromas lead tographite, currant and mineral flavors with amazing buoyancy. Firmtannins with immense concentration and bright acidity give theimpression of greatness to come.

2005 is a special year. You can expectdrinking pleasure for decades to come.

A small harvest of miniature berries was what thevineyards gave us in 2004. Wineenthusiasts often ask and wonder about the art of winemaking. What I often wonder about is the art ofresilience; the challenge of transforming the carefully tended fruit intoprofound bottles given the wildly changing nature of the vintage.

The 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon presents a beautifulbalance with typical Bordeaux-like character. Abundant earth with pointed aromas emphasizing blackberry and cassis,this wine is elegant on the palate with a forward finish of well-definedcurrant, herb, and cedar.

Like many winemakers, we recommend drinking eitheryoung or old, meaning now or after 8-10 years.

Let's face it, the no-holds-barred, low cut dress mode of Cabernet,so popular with "competition' wines, becomes tiresome at the dinnertable. Sommeliers across the country tell me that the style of ourCabernet is different for California. They say that the weight andtexture of our wine suits their contemporary cuisine. Music to myears. With lively acidity, balanced tannins and generousterroir-driven fruit character, this style of wine holds one'sinterest longer. A dynamic change from first glass to last is oneof our goals. 2002 was an incredible year for all of our estatewines. A very cold winter with low rainfall gave way to a coolgrowing season, low yields and a late harvest. We knew we hadsomething special early on in tasting the barrels. Aromas of leadpencil shavings, cassis, and blackberry are followed by texturalexpansiveness on the palate with flavors of black current, aniseand earth. The total impression is large, generous, age-worthy andabove all tasty.

Mount Eden's Cabernet stands apart in the vast ocean of overripeand over-priced California Cabernet. Our exposed mountain siteyields a wine of specificity and classic proportion. The overlookedqualities of palate cleansing acidity and varietal character areabundant in the 2003, not to mention moderate alcohol. 2003 was atextbook harvest for us in the cool October sun. Slow developmentwas key to the success of this rugged late ripening grape and ourcoastal mountaintop produced just that. A sweet perfume of cassis,black currant and leather abound in the nose leading to an opulentblend of blackberry, anise and roasted herb flavors that arepersistent. Comparable in weight and tannins to the great 1994vintage (which is drinking beautifully now) the 2003 will be ableto age another ten years before finding its peak.
